What does saving money feel like?

Main Post:

Do you feel good, sad you can’t spend, happy to see the number rise in a HYSA, angry you can’t spend, anxious about the future, depressed or wish you saved earlier, or calm / at peace?

What are your habits, that contribute to you keeping money saved and not spending it on family, or people you feel for (twitch donations), or luxury items (possibly expensive therapy).

The closest I can share is I have a company 401k, a ROTH IRA, and a SoFi savings account. I start to feel anxious if I have money saved and I want to curb that feeling.

Top Comment: I’m not saving - I’m buying time, my time.

How are you guys saving money ?

Main Post:

How are you guys saving money on a tight budget while still managing to enjoy life andreach your money goals?
Any tips you have would be helpful.

Top Comment: Budgeting out every penny that comes in. That means that watching spending, even if it's running into a gas station and grabbing a soda or a candy bar. Shopping by a grocery list, along with putting things back if the price has surged and more than I was expecting and replacing it with something less expensive. Planning out meals, to avoid waste. I also have started being able to preserve my veggies and other perishable items. I have also started utilizing the bus to avoid extra miles on my car. I have started grocery shopping with a friend as well, so we can have a nice time and also it makes me pay closer attention to what I'm doing, instead of getting in a fog of just going through the motions. I enjoy life regardless because my happiness is pretty simple. I get that from my dad. The birds in the morning, the sun on my face, it all has a good happy quality. I was at the bus station early this morning, so I was enjoying watching the pigeons. I'm turning into that old person on a park bench just watching the world do its thing. And since Fetch has started giving points for games, I can enjoy myself a bit while I'm wasting time and I'm almost to the amount to cash out for a $50 giftcard that I'm using on shoes.

Tell me how to save money.

Main Post:

My father-in-law expressed interest in downsizing. My husband would love to buy his childhood home. The house is a good sized home and in a good school district.

How do you save to make a big purchase?

Frugal tips? Saving tips? Investment tips?

Would love advice!

Top Comment: Have extra money from your paycheck going directly into a separate savings account. Preferably a high yield savings account. That’s the easiest way. Look at your budget see where you can cut back on spending in different categories. Pay down all consumer debt.

I just realised why other young people have lots of savings and I don't!

Main Post:

I'm 24 M and have been in a professional job for 1 year. I currently have £1,000 in savings and like 200 in stocks.

I used to feel really bad when I watched those videos of young people being interviewed on the street and they all had £50k, £30k, £25k etc. In savings. I used to wonder how they did it while still living a lifestyle that suits them.

And then I realised that they don't!

I spoke to most of the people I know with high savings and they all said that they live at home with their parents and are using that to save up high amounts. Even if they're in professional jobs, they live at home specifically to build high savings portfolios.

I haven't lived at home in some time and until now, I felt so behind and thought there was something wrong with my budgeting and me. I do live a nice lifestyle and do what I want with money, and I do have a savings goal of 10k this year. But I hadn't realised that I'm not behind... it's just different circumstances.

Mind blowing.

Top Comment: I hit my first 10k in savings at 29. By 32 I had lost my job and it took the vast majority of that while I was applying for jobs and interviewing for months. I'll now be back on track to get 10k in savings in approximately 15 months. Life happens, don't worry about it.

Top Comment: Autotransfer your money to a HY savings account every time you get paid. Every time you need to spend, you’ll be more careful because you’ll see how that lowers the amount in your savings!

How did you start saving money?

Main Post:

I should start saving but I don't know where to start. Like do I save a percentage everytime I get a paycheck? Or do I save all my money after paying my debts? How much should I have saved for each month?

Top Comment: The most important thing is increasing your income and not allowing lifestyle creep to happen. Job hopping and raises till you hit a minimum of 70k/year.

I struggle with saving money

Main Post:

How do you all save money or do you never go to sporting events, concerts, or on vacations? I rarely (like once every 3 years) do any of these things. I don’t do anything fun because everything is so expensive.

When I make progress saving money, you can count on a car repair, plumbing issue at the house, or medical bill to swiftly kick my savings in the ass. Never fails! I can’t seem to save money faster than life events cannonball my bank account.

Top Comment: Budgeting is the only way and it doesn’t have to be complicated. Use a Google spreadsheet, list your income in one column, your expected expenses in a second column and your actual expenses in a third column. You need to do this for a month or so to get a grasp on where your money is going and rebalance going forward. This will give you a picture of your finances and then you have to decide if you need to earn more income or cut back on expenses. Good luck.

A Cool Guide for Saving Money

Main Post: A Cool Guide for Saving Money

Top Comment: My wife and I make above the median household income for our area and our needs are still above 50%. I can’t imagine anyone able to save making less than we do. We have friends who are both teachers. I make what they make combined, their needs must be 80% or higher to live in the area.
